How often should you get your gutters cleaned out?

In general, you should plan to clean gutters at least once or twice a year. But if you have a lot of tall trees near your roof, you're going to have to do the work more often. Gutters should be cleaned six times during the year, with at least three cleanings during the fall season. Both location and climate affect the ideal number of cleanings, as well as your overall approach to gutter protection services. We spoke with Don with Gutter Cleaning Vancouver and he said "With the amount of rain and tree coverage we experience in the PNW, I advise having gutters cleaned out no less than 6 times per year."  

In general, we recommend cleaning gutters, whether you do it yourself or do it professionally, twice a year. We typically find ourselves cleaning gutters for regular customers in late spring and early winter. Spending an afternoon cleaning dirt out of gutters is probably not an activity you look forward to as a homeowner, however, routine gutter maintenance is essential to keeping the roof, exterior, and foundation of your home free of water, debris, and other unwanted materials. A visual inspection of the gutters during the fall (before it starts to rain) is a good starting point.

Ice is adept at rendering gutters completely useless unless removed immediately, while copious amounts of rain can be equally damaging. From preventing damage to your home to preventing pests from moving, a clean gutter system is important to the health of your home. However, just because a home is located in an area less likely to be debris doesn't mean gutters don't need attention. Take some time to remove debris from the gutter, being careful not to extend its reach beyond the ladder, as it could fall off if it stretches too much.

If your gutters are new and working perfectly, you may need to clean them less than old gutters that need to be replaced. You can stay ahead of changing seasons and protect your home from water damage, rot, and decay by regularly cleaning gutters. In a humid climate, such as in the Pacific Northwest, mold will begin to grow and thrive, leaving the exterior of the gutter blackened and dirty-looking. If gutters cannot properly drain water from the roof, water buildup can reach your roof and cause damage to the shingles when the weather descends to freezing conditions.
